Default New carb overflowing and revving high on idel

Hi folks, I’ve got a 110cc kids quad for my son, had issues with the carburettor overflowing, got a replacement and it’s still overflowing, the float is operational.
In neutral it starts and then revs high and stays high, I’ve fiddeled with the air and fuel settings which seemed to bring the revs down but make the carb overflow more! Also the spark plug looked a little sooty and a bit of black smoke (probably down to incorrect settings but thought I’d mention it anyway)
I’ve tried turning the throttle to the max and to the minimum on the adjustment screw on the thumb throttle.
any help would be much appreciated, I’m not very good with engines and this is our first quad, my sons pretty disappointed not to be riding it on half term, thought I’d try for advice on here first before sending it off to a specialist
many thanks
sam

If you have a drain screw and nipple on the carb bowl you can do a level test or sounds like you simply need to lower the float level to where it will shut off quicker. Plus other things may be involved such as have you checked/adjusted the valve clearance?

thanks for the reply! Could you tell me how to adjust the height of the float? I’m able to do a test, I just need to find some clear tube! Many thanks

also how do I check/ adjust the valve clearance?

If the fuel is overflowing, could be float sticking, float adjusted too high. See if this video helps. On a two stroke but carbs are all basically the same.

I bet you're running ethanol fuel.

I’m managed to stop it from overflowing, struggling to get it to start now but when it does it revs really high without any throttle, turning the fuel down on the side of the carb does nothing to help it, the throttle lever feels like there’s not much resistance! Think I’ll have to send it to a mechanic

Made sure the slide is in the bore properly? Slide has a slot that aligns with the pin so the slide can bottom out on the carb. Some people have actually installed them wrong and crammed the spring and cap on..
