Itp 589's vs. Mudlites

I need new tire on my Polaris 400 Sportsman. I would like to know what the comparison is of the Mudlites vs. the Itp 589's. I ride on hard packed and alot in the mud.

We have a set of lite's on a 500 Sportsman and from what I can see it everything you need in a tire. Clear great in the snow, not sure about the mud yet it's still frozen. On the 700 we have a set of 589,'s what a massive tire. The lugs are huge and grab the mud and soupy trail very well.

Both are 6 ply so they will stop some of those punctures we all get from time to time. If I had a choice at this point, I would stick with the Lites. They are about 40 pounds lighter on c-series than 589's on steel rims. To a Sportsman that's huge.

Don't have anything to say bad about either, the 589 are serious mud and soft trail tires.

I would think the 589 would be too much for a 400 sportsman if an older chain driven version. The 589 are a lot better tire in the rough spots than Mudlites. When you put tires on keep in mind of extra tension etc. I don't like my 589m/s on the hard packed areas because I find them too heavy and and when you lift the wheels off the ground they come back down too fast.

Thanks guys, it has been a real help. I think I will go with the Mudlites. It sounds like that will be the way to go for me.

Good choice. IMO the only thing the 589s have on the ml is life-span.

Either the 589 or Mudlites would probably be good. What size tire did you want to mount? The Mudlites in a 25 or under will have a shorter tread depth. Also, have you considered the Mudrunners by Goodyear?

I have 10" wheels on the rear, and the mudlites don't make a 26 for the 10" rim. I think the 27s would be to much for my 400, so I might have to go with the 26" 589s, unless I wanted to buy two 12" rear rims.

I had the same 10" rear wheel delima. I could either get tires to fit, and not quite what I wanted, or go and buy two stock rear wheels from a 650, then get the tires I wanted, or do what I did in the end, and order up new rims and tires. I figure if your going to all the trouble, spend a few more bucks and get new rims. Now my old ones are spares and will be used on "gravel road running" days.
