Default New Bighorns- Q's

Hey everyone, well after alot of thought and comments from alot of you guys I decided to get the bighorns and a set of type7 itp wheels. They came today and I put them on the machine and tested it out. They are sure different than stock, thats for sure. Seems I lost a little power, I assume cause bighorns run big on size and also because they are a decent amount heavy than stock tires and rims.

I think the tire roll is gone with them which I hated with stock tires. They cruise down the road nice also. There is a little shake now on the machine. Did anyone else have a shake when they put theirs on? Its not bad but it is there. Also going down the road you can feel a forward push like everytime the tire rotates r something. It has a constant vum vum vum vum vum vum to it. Another thing is that it is real touch for steering. You just barely touch the bars one way and you turn, it is real responsive.

My thought are to check toe in and out and see if it is close. What do people run for toe vs out? Did anyone ever have to balance the tires and rims? Also I didn't check the pressure in the front tires yet but the back were off of my low pressure gauge which maxes at 7psi so they have too much air in them. What pressures is everyone running in them?

I sure like the looks of the new set vs stock also. If anyone has any ideas, let me know. Thanks alot

Mark

You have to be super careful and hold the tire centered while tightening each lug across from the other till they are snug then tighten each one going from one to the next in a circular pattern......

First time I mounted mine just snugging them while the tire hung there and guess what! I almost lost a wheel.....I did loose a lug nut and the others were real loose...

Lucky for me a buddy had a good eye and noticed the problem.....I wondered why it was shaking so bad running like 55mph between trails

Mark,

I put Bighorns on my Foreman last year and at first I thought I had made a mistake because I did not like the ride at all.

I believe the most important thing is to check the air pressure carefully. I found the best ride is at the factory settings or even slightly less. I think the Bighorns are very sensitive to tire pressure. Because they are expensive, my first instinct was to be sure I had plenty of air pressure so I didn't damage my new tires, but that was a big mistake. The ride on the Foreman with the Bighorns with too much pressure was absolutely horrible.

The other thing that you can check is that the colored dot on the tire should line up with the valve stem. This is supposed to offset any imbalance inherent from the manufacturing process of the wheels and tires. Mine are not lined up, but I haven't noticed a big problem.

Don't worry, after you get the air pressure right, you'll like the Bighorns. They are tough, tough, tough, wear like iron, and provide great traction. I find myself hitting the 4x4 button much less often on the rocky trails we ride because of the extra traction. I really like the extra confidence of being able to scrub up against rocks and stumps and not having to worry about ripping a tire apart. And... Don't tell anyone I said this, but I think they're even OK in the mud. Enjoy your new tires.

GC, welcome to the board. i also have to agree with you on all points. the little yellow dots are supposed to be lined up with the valves stems (mine arn't either, tho). and also, tire pressure will make a big difference. i am running 4.5# for general use, and will drop that to as low as 3# for traction or floatation, but it steers much harder. above the 4.5-5#, the ride seems to go downhill. these numbers are bound to change a little for different machine weights and tire sizes. i'm still not through experementing with pressures, tho...

Its not just bighorns. Its about every aftermarket, non radial tire. My Swamplites wobbel also a little, but only on tar. It was worse until i retorqued the lugs to my specs. If you dont look at the specs on the lug ft pounds of torque, you can warp your rims. I redid mine and had a huge improvement. Also, like posted, you will have to mess with tire pressure. I run about 6 lbs in mine.
