Silver lake sound emmisons test coming in 2002
#21
I am unfamiliar w/ sound testing, im assuming this is done b/4 u enter the park. DO they test ya every time you come to parking lot, then back out to dunes, seems like this would cause a LONG line. If they only tested you the one time you enter couldnt u switch pipes? or would they possibly do spot testing in the dunes??? just a question. Would probably get in big trouble if caught switching after testing though.

Yes, all these sound issues can be very confusing. I had the same questions, especially about how machines are tested, and how loud different machines are with certain pipes. I did some searching and found an awesome page with all this info. It describes the sound testing in Oregon, and at the bottom of the page it has links to pages with archives of different machines and how they tested with different pipes, including stock machines. You'll see huge decibel differences in similarly equipped ATVs. For instance, Banshees with Toomey pipes have readings from 87-101 decibels!! BUT, remember this: horsepower, bike set-up, and SILENCER CONDITION all play a huge factor in how much noise your bike makes. A properly packed silencer will make much less noise than one that is blown out, and it makes MORE horsepower when packed properly, which many people still don't understand. Plus, if you run with your airbox lid off, as I and most of us do, your machine will make more noise than if you have your lid on. It's surprising how much motor noise escapes through an open airbox, test it sometime. Hope the link helps.
