just got a johnboat with trailer, could use ideas and help
Hey, so last year I bought a 120 GB xbox with several games for $100, and last week I traded it for a 14 ft johnboat with trailer. The boat is an Alumacraft and is in good shape, but it could use a new coat of paint. The trailer wheels do need replacing and the trailer itself will have to be sanded down and repainted. So my two questions here are:
1. What kind of motor should I get for the boat?
2. Should I just buy a new trailer as opposed to fixing this one up?

Try to find the plate and see what the max hp is and try to stay within 75% of that is the general rule of thumb. Most 14ft are rated around 20hp but like states above it depends how wide it is. I have seem some wide 14ft be rated up to 40hp. One of my friends had a wide 14ft with a 35 that would run in the upper 30s to low 40s which is very fast in a little tin boat. I would say fix the trailer if it is straight because new ones are expensive.

I have an 14' Starcraft aluminum V-hull. We have a long shaft Evinrude 25 HP and it moves it along pretty quickly. We even took it on some saltwater just off the coast here in Massachusetts. Older Evinrudes and Johnson 2-strokes are pretty powerful but noisy. Some of the newer Honda, Nissan, and Yamaha 4-strokes are a bit quieter.
