Polaris Sportsman 800 Won't Shift gear to gear

I will try to put as much detail as I can.

I have a 2007 Sportsman 800. If it is turned off I can shift gear to gear without a problem.

When it is running I can shift out of park to any gear. From high I can shift down or to reverse.

Once in Reverse or in Low I can not shift unless I turn the machine off.

I have read many posts and have some items to try but wanted to get some ideas from the forumn.

One more thing. Prior to this issue I could have the machine in reverse or low and just sit there. Now if it is in Low or Reverse I need to hold the brake in or it will start moving.

UGH - please help. Can't afford to bring it to the dealer for service.

Sounds like your idle is too high. What is it idleing at. If it's too high turn it down and your issue should go away. It's not nice on the machine to be shifting with idle high.

X2 on the idle being too high. If it is creeping with no throttle applied that usually points to the idles being too high.

Sorry for the long deley in posting but was kinda stumped on this one.

Idle is fine. It is looking like the Belt. It goes in next week for service to find out for sure.

Hate paying for service but this one is beyond me at this time.

Thank you for the replies

Sounds like it might be a clutch issue. If it is creeping at idle, then that means the clutch is grabbing. Had this happen earlier this year. It was a broken spring attachment point on the clutch shoe return spring. The shoe was thrown out against the clutch bell. In low or reverse, the gearing was low enough to allow this low amount of friction to move the bike. In high gear, it wouldn't move. Had to jam it in gear because it was spinning the shaft at idle.

$100 and a few hours to take it apart and put it back together was all it took.

Good Luck.

And the cause was

Thank you for all the info. The final issue was a broken motor mount and a shreded belt. Some shards from the belt was messing with the clutches. I feel lucky it was under $200 to fix.

happy I read this, I have the same issue but it’s a 2012 800 EFI and not sure how to adjust idle. It also makes a high pitch noise when I stop??any advice??
