Used ATV Title or Certificate of Ownership
I am buying a used atv and the guy said he bought it new which I believe. He says that he doesn't think he has the title but he does have a certificate of some sort in a safe, he said its about the size of a post card. Does anyone know what the typical documentation is you buy a polaris new or what the doc he is referring to would be? its a 2008

I bought a ATV and lost the ownership slip[ (Canada) . They (DOT) just run the serial numbers through a computer check to make sure its not stolen and re issue a new ownership/title. |
I'll assume you're in the US. It depends on the state. Some states require nothing more than a bill of sale, others a title. Check with your local registry of motor vehicles. They should be able to give you a definite answer.

Only two things down here that would prove owner ship is a title itself or an MSO,manufacturers statement of origin that most dealers get that can be used to get a clean title.Possible that he might have that.

At least, in Massachusetts, you get the Certificate of Origin at the time of sale. And, once it's paid off a title is sent to you.

I have a registration (or title, I can't remember which) and it's the only way to prove who owns the ATV. Most states you need some kind of paperwork like that.
