Please HELP on Rancher

I posted this a while back but couldn't find the post.
I was riding in a river on my 2000 rancher 4x4 and fell in a whole and got stuck, my friends told me to keep it running in the water, so I did ( I think I should have killed it ) . When we got it out we unhooked the spark plug and tried to drain it. It started working but white smoke was coming out of the exhaust and it would back fire a lot but it would still go, now when I trie to ride it it wont go over 4 mph and then it will die, it will also die when I rev it in nuetral. We changed the oil, drained the gas and I cleaned out the air box, tomorrow I am getting a new spark plug. What can I do to make it run again? Thanks.

To drain it you need to pull the carb. I don't recall if that required disconnecting your throttle cable and choke cable, but if you can get away without doing that it's a lot easier. You will need to pull some plastic for ease of access, also your seat too. When you get the carb pulled (make sure your fuel switch is "off"), unscrew the 4 screws that hold the float bowl and pour out the fuel. If you can do it, a shot or two of carb cleaner in there wouldn't hurt. Then put everything back together.
I'd look up a parts diagram on the computer, if you don't have a service manual, to get an idea what to look for. It's fairly simple, just take your time and pay attention to what parts go where.
Last tip, if it's real muddy, wash everything around your carb first, and put a clean rag into each hole the carb came out of while you are working on it.

It'll start to run now but it acts like it isn't getting any gas. I have to put it on choke to start it tho and it usually dies when i put it into 1st gear. It hasnt been fired up in a while tho.
