Default Skid Plates

Just wondering if anyone has had any major problems with the plastic skid plates. I have one which is 1/2 inch, very durable but I'm not sure if I should leave it in the garage and put on metal one when I get my Bike this weekend.

I have a plastic chassis skid for my 400ex made with the plastic stuff they use on ice rink boards. It's very durable but I don't ride over alot of rocks.
