I have a 2002 400 EX, went riding last weekend riping around some trails with a little mud. I went to start it for the next round and it would not crank it just clicked. It did start later on it's own. It seen to be hit or miss the rest of the day,any thoughts on what the deal is? When it did clicking thing I tryed puting the lights on and thay did not dim.

Sounds like its time to buy a new battery. Put you battery on a charger overnight and see how it cranks the next morning. If it starts right off the bat. I say BATTERY $69.95 at your local shop.[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img]

being an 02' your battery is no that old, but it still could be toast. I had the same problem you did, I checked the battery and the connections were loose. Check that first. If thats not it have the battery tested at your local auto parts dealer (they will test it for free). They also sell the same batteries as your Honda dealer for much cheaper.

I would check your positive lead wire to the starter from the battery or the connections as you suggested. Make sure it's not been rubbing somewhere and chafed through. You said you were riding in the mud when it happened.......if wet mud built up where it's chafed...could have caused a short. Mud dries out........no more short.....just a thought. While the "lights" test is not perfect, no dimming is usually a good sign of a strong battery, so look for the connection.

The other possibility is if you managed to get all your head and cylinder fins clogged with mud and were working the motor hard, it may have overheated......badly enough and it will stop the battery from turning the motor over.......

I agree... check your connections first. Second... if it just clicks... the starter relay may be bad. I don't think that a new bike should have any problems with the battery or starter at this point.
