Questions for the Honda Boy's

I'm going to build a motor for a buddies 400ex and I have a few questions for the Big Bore Honda Guys.

It's a Stock 2000 400 ex with a FMF power core 4, K&N and jet kit. The motor is a little tired and were going for some power when we do it. We want to gain Bottom end- Midrange for Trail riding. This is what I suggested for the build 12:1 piston, Hot cam, clutch kit and a bigger Carb. I have not heard much about raising the compression on a 400 and what it does to heating issues. He wouldn't be opposed to a 440 kit but doesn't want to spend the extra $ if 40cc's arent going to help that much. Does any one know if a 12:1 standard bore vs a 12:1 440 over bore make a whole lot of difference. I know there is no replacement for displacement so I kinda of answered my own question.

What he is looking for is to gain power in basicly one gear higher than he is now. I don't know if I exsplained that right. Give me some opinions and things to look for and places to buy stuff. I've built a few big bore raptors and am confidint that I could do some Honda Wrenching.

So lets hear whats up to make a tired 400 ex fast.

BTW who is the 400ex head Guru for porting?

Spend the money for a stroker crank. That is the safest way to gai alot of bottum end pull.

i got a hot cam stage 1 cam..and an 11:1 comp piston..i will make you a good deal on them..then you need to get you a stroker crank..a carb i got a 39mm carb on my 440 i might possibly sell...and get you some head work done as well and that will really wake it up...but before its all over you might as well go ahead and order the 440 kit outta rockymountainatv.com i put it in my 440 and i have yet to have another 400 beat me and i think its all in the head work !!get your head work from curtis sparks...

I would suggest going to a 416 piston, a Ross piston can get you to the true 11.2 to 1, or 12.1 to 1, with the stock . 025" base gsket. If you chose another piston, ask what the deck height will be and most likely get rid of the base gasket and use a sealant.
Don't do the 440 yet, there is not an overbore, you will need sleve whenever you need a bore. Go with a stage 1 Hot cam (or an XR Cam), stage II, with a bigger carb hits really hard up top, kind of 2 strokey if you know what I mean.
Port and Polish goes a long way with this set up. I ran a 13:1 w/ out head gasket problems. I had some problems, but I was around 14.7:1 when that happened, and not running the correct set up for that high of compression (I didn't know I was that high).
The stock carb seems to make the bset bottom range torque. I would suggest holding off onthe carb until you get a chance to ride it. Don;t get me wrong it makes alot more power, but it comes in harder up top. You said you wnat low end power, for the $450 it costs, I would see how you like it stock first.
You will want to get rid of the FMF, ans go with a LRD, Graydon, CT, Sparks, ect.
It will heat up andn fade on big hills, and inthe hot summer, but I found it no worse than stock.
Sparks is the place to get tht port work done, I donlt know about Craycraft, well I know about him, I donlt know if he plays with Hondas.
Good Luck!

Can you come to Marysville tonight LOBO? I'll have the 440 out there and you can ride it if you want to get an idea of the power difference

I disagree. The only replacement for displacement is technology.

no...im not saying that...what i said was: THE ONLY REPLACEMENT FOR DISPLACEMENT IS TECHNOLOGY

for example a 1996 3.2L BMW M3 put out about 240HP...the new(01 to present) BMW M3 that is also 3.2L puts out 343 to 363 hp

PS...these are NA engines....no FI
