The z400 is alittle faster stock. One thing you might want to check into with the z/kfx 400's is if they are still having problems with the frames cracking. I know the 2003's had bad frames and were supposed to be fixed in 04, but I think I heard of a 04 frame breaking also. Either way you'll have a blast on what ever quad you get.

Z400 is faster for sure, its smoother, it shifts nicer (not that the Honda is bad), softer seat, easier to pull clutch, reverse, liquid cooling. I know that many have said that the Z is barely faster than a 400ex, I own both, my buddies own more of each, I have much experience on both, riding, wrenching, and hopping up. I have a piped, filtered, and jetted Z, that will run with a nicely built ex. I have a buddy with a DUncan 440, its a few seasons old, and the z is faster. I have since added a carb, cams, diff comp ratio, its Raptor fast now.
The ex is a nice machine, it feels lighter (they are within pounds), its cheaper to buy parts for, ans cheaper to buy.
I you don't mind the diff in price, no question, get the Z.
I have had zero probs w/ the frame issues. They have beefed up the 04's. I have one of the very first ones, not a problem. Some have had axle problems, I even have spacers, no problems. Usually my woman rides it, but trust me, I have ridden it hard too.

so if i get a 400ex rather than the z and put all kinds of mods on it will it keep up with the z with the same mods

No, mod for mod, a 400ex is slower (up a hill, in a drag, nothing about a track, thats all rider on these two quads)

i heard the z400 is a little faster (thats what im getting) i dont have to worry about the frame cracking because i am going to make it tuffer by making brackets and other supports to make if touffer.....

Are you talking top speed?
They are the same, don't worry about top speed.

I own both. They both have the same motor mods (K&N, vented airbox lid, PowerBomb Header, Ti-4 muffler). The Z is considerably faster.

if money is an issue, definitly get the 400ex and mod it, the z400 is only slightly faster and has only 3-4 more ponies so a lightly modded 400ex should be able to keep up with a z400, that is if the 400ex is modded correctly. as for the 450R; its more of a full race quad, not really in the same class as the ex or z

correct.........a lightly modded ex will keep up with a stock Z
buy why start with a slower quad?
why not just get a Z and be able to out run lightly modded ex's?
stock for stock the Z will put SEVERAL lengths on a ex.......I have seen it with my own two eyes

I have seen a stock Z out run an ex (yoshi full system, stage 2 hot cam,k&n..I don't remeber if the airbox was vented or if he removed the box all together?)
the Z won by a little more that one length.......but it was COMPLETELY STOCK and the ex was modded......

I have a 426ex, beats allot of other quads and my son loves it, but wants a 450r now. So I guess what I'm saying is get what you want, but you will want something faster later anyway.

I personally watched a completely stock Z400 with a relitavely inexperienced driver put at least 10 lengths (from what I could tell) on a piped (at least) 400ex. I was impressed.

I agree with the posts saying that a Z will put lengths on a ex. I have owned both ( I just sole my built 426ex) and its not as close as many say, but people call BS, so I just say its a little faster. In reality, you need motor work on a ex, to keep up with a jetted Z.

i dont kow now i kinda want the 450r it will take me longer to get it but it would be faster than the z400 i allready made one mistake and got the z250 when i should of wated a year and got the z400

OK guys do you think it would be worth the money buy a Z and hop it with the money you have saved from not buying a/either 450.....cause the reason I ask is that I heard a built Z440-450 will run with the new 450s.......what do you guys think is it worth the money or no?

thanks
later

The Z is a nice quad, I would have bought one if I could've found one for just a couple bills more than the EX but around here they get list price so for $800.00 less than the Z I definetly couldn't pass on the EX.

Has anyone ever raced a stock Z against a stock 04 EX? I'm just curious if the outcome was the same as my experience.................

i dont get this, i watched a movie with a pretty well modded 440ex beat a raptor in a drag race, they got through their gears and the 440 beat it by about 2 quad lengths could this be true?

a piped-jetted-no air box - 400ex will beat a stock z400 in a 300ft drag. but not by much- 1 or 2 bike lengths at best. If you put the same mods on the z400- it would clearly beat the 400ex.

yeah, it's so unbelievable, if it's a rappy beating something like the dodge viper top end- that's believable - but not a slightly modded 400cc quad vs a stock 400cc quad, I have so much to gain by making up lies and posting them...... maybe I should buy a raptor- then I could own the best quad ever made...... Do all raptor owners land on their heads when they crash????????????
