Permanent fix for rubicon tranny.

I have a 2001 Rubicon, the ESP, D1, and D2 lights all flash and it won’t shift. This appears to be a common problem with many Rubicon owners. Some people suggest resetting it to fix the problem, but is that a permanent fix or is it just going to keep happening, and is there a permanent fix other than simply resetting it?

The first time it happens I would reset it. If it happens a second time, there is a problem and needs to be diagnosed and repaired. If you need help retrieving the codes or resetting the ECM, just let me know.

I just read your other post. Ours has never done this in the 4000 miles we have put on it. I do believe the Angle Sensor is a common problem. You might want to replace it and make sure the electrical connector is clean and put a little dielectric grease in the connector before you plug it back in.

The speed sensor tells the ECM how fast the ATV is going for trans calculations (shifting points) and for the speedometer.

Just turning the key off and back on resets the ECM. The failure code will be left in the self diagnostics memory (up to 2 codes will be stored). If it's an existing failure, it will flash immediately after you turn on the key. Usually the speedo sensors go intermittent, so it will work for a while, then start flashing again. If you replace an angle sensor, carb, throttle cable, or even adjust the play in the throttle cable, the system should be initialized. It's very easy but hard to explain, best to have shop manual to refer to. As usual, Specta is right about the speed sensor. The best clue that it's bad (besides the self-diagnostics funtion) is your speedometer will not read correctly, in conjunction with the meter flashing you described.
