Read this great article, if you have not already. Everything that pertains to the CRF, also pertains to your TRX:

I changed both the engine oil and filter, and the trans oil at 2 and 10 hrs (the break-in period). During break-in, I used Honda GN4 in the motor (what the dealer put in it) and in the trans, Honda HP Trans Oil.
After break-in, I run Honda HP4M (a slick synthetic/petrolium blend, JASO MB oil with moly) in the engine, and Honda HP Trans Oil in the transmission.

After break in I'd go with Amsoil 0W-40 4-Stroke, a fully synthetic oil manufactured for 4-stroke atv's. For more info and a free product catalog go to:

I just bought a black 05 today The manual says NO oil that is energy conservation rated. I also had bad experiences with HP4 on clutch packs, it made them slip. I may look at the Mobil red top for the engine. rmeember those Amsoils and others may be formulated for common sumps oiling both clutches and engine. If they are serperate like on the 450 you can run a slicker oil in the engine and a clutch friendly oil in the trans case. You can't go wrong with Honda lubes but Mobil1 may be easier to get or cheaper.

If you had a clutch slipping with HP4, I don't think you can blame the oil! At one time, HP4 and HP4 with moly (now called HP4M) came in bottles of the same color. You had to really look closely and read the fine print to tell the difference. I would bet you might have put some moly in by mistake??? I made this mistake once myself, but with no adverse effects whatsoever. (Or, maybe your clutch was just toast to begin with?)
HP4M (with moly) now comes in a SILVER bottle. The only application for HP4M is in the engine of a CRF450/250 or the TRX450R (or the soon to come TRX250R???), and NOT in the transmission of ANYTHING. HP4 without moly, comes in a GOLD bottle like it alway has, and can be used in bikes with wet clutch transmissions.
