Sounds like something might be slipping. If able, pull apart the clutch and make sure everything is sound. Then try adjusting at the handlebars and where the clutch cable attatches to the bike at the crankcase.

I have owned several XRs..
Let me ask you a couple of questions.....
1)have you recently switched to a new oil.....switched to synthetic?
2)How recent is your last oil change?
If you have recently switched to synthetic drain it out and refill with dino oil and see if that fixes it.. you may have an old glaze on your clutch plates and the new oil is too slippery.
If you havent changed your oil in awhile, do it and see if that helps.
One last thing to do if those 2 dont apply....I have done this, and many will disagree, but it saves you from opening the engines..
Drain the oil and put in 2 quarts of kerosene and let it sit for an hour or so, move the clutch in and out while going back and forth in gear (NOT RUNNING)!!! just let the clutch plates clean in the kero.
Drain the kero and leave bolt out overnight.
If that works, your plates were just overly glazed and you should be good to go now with a fresh oil change.
If it doesnt work......You need new clutch plates.
