450R with HRC = DS650 beater

Just raced a slightly modded 02 DS650 on pavement with my 450R. Isn't even close, 450R = much quicker. Swapped quads and similar results. I think the first thing a DS owner should do is gear that monster for top end because the power band is so narrow and the torque so immense I know it needs a gear change. On the otherhand, I love the stock gearing on the 450R, 1st gear = all traction and from there the spread between gears is perfect. Anyhow just an FYI.

The DS has a strong midrange, but less on the top and bottom. My buddy use to have a DS, and I had no trouble hanging with him on the Z400. The R should be no problem at all.

My ds piped/jetted on pavement vs a buddies 450r piped/jetted is a pretty even race [ sometimes I get a slight edge, sometines he gets a slight edge ] untill 3/4 through 5th gear, when my ds starts to pull away. I know for a fact I am 3, 4, or 5 mph faster on top speed. On dirt tho he is quicker. Less wheel spin+ lighter weight.

Have you considered gearing the DS for more top end to try get more spread brtween the gears. When we swapped quads I had the best luck taking off in 2nd with rpm's wot and slowly releasing the clutch = least amount of spin and seemed to be the quickest launch.

I just bought a 15 t sporket [stock is 16], but havent put it on yet. The only place the 16 tooth sproket is an asset to me is on pavement. No where to get to the top of 5th gear around here in dirt, or sand, so a 17 tooth wouldn't be good for me. We have a sand track around here, no jumps [small rises, and drop offs] but plenty of bermed {banked} 35- 40 mph corners to roost around. I rarely get out of 4th gear on the straits, so I will try a 15 tooth sproket to accelerate quicker. Now, wide open desert racers might like a 17 t sproket.

The owner of the DS650 says he clocked it at 85mph riding beside a 954RR. Is it posible with only silencer and jetting mods? Our race was only to 40mph.

My ds has the air lid box lid removed, k+n filter, +wrap, fmf slip on, dyno jet kit {190 main}, and ron wood rev box, and I know I won't go 85mph. Maybe on a good day, with a tail wind, and a little luck, it might go 80mph on pavement. But If I had to guess {never had it clocked}, I could maybe go 77 to 79mph, with 16/40 gearing. Keep in mind alot of people simply lie about their quads top speed.

ive noticed that alot of local riders i talk to give me bs top speeds like 90 all the time. I just shrug em off.

I am sure no stock quad goes over 75 mph. Utes with speedos are natoriuosly inacurate. No speedo [cars included]is completely acurate. There are even 2 types of radar guns, one fast and one slow[ ask a baseball player ]. GPS is probily the only way for a true speed reading.

Mine will do 75MPH... after a couple little mods
