Best Mod's for 250R?
you want 40 from the crank or rear wheels? in early advertising campaigns back in the day Honda advertised the 250R with 40 crank hp. that's a fact despite what argument it may stir up.
the only mods on mine are a pipe, rad valve reed cage, boysen reeds, air filter and jetting. it will run neck and neck with the famed raptor 660 (stock). but if you add porting, shaving the head, (get someone GOOD to do it for you) and a airstryker or whatever carb to it and you will get alot more out of it without spending alot of $$$. edlebrock had a cool carb they were developing for 2 strokes (claimed it added at least 4-5hp) and it allowed you to do ALL adjusting without taking it apart. they never released it to the public and immediately pulled it off their website when i called them to get one and spoke with the VP. He apologized and said it was developmental and they would not even sell me one of those.
i think the 310 kits have gone down in price so look into one of them too.
yeah with $1500 you can make it happen with a 250R. they have the excellent balance, are light, and even slightly modded they downright fly. i love mine but accidently stripped out the oil drain plug so now i have to fix this without rigging some crap up...any ideas, anyone? i want it to be fixed cleanly without some jbweld crap. one honda place told me that id have to buy new cases and no one knows what an oversize plug is anymore...i dont think i need new cases for this...

Get an old style Chevy drain plug with the 9/16 sized hex and a tap to match then a new style gasket-rubber/steel sealing washer. Grease the tap to hold the shavings then flush the crankcase with some oil. I also cut some of the non threaded portion of the drain plug off to make sure it didn't make any contact inside the case, it works.....
As far as mods, as mentioned make sure the crank and clutch/trans are in good shape. I sent my stock bore cylinder to Jeremy Bennight (Sand Trix) for porting, cool head with 19cc dome, 38AS, TRX5 pipe, V-force cage. This will get you the power you want.....

I must mention that this is a trike not a quad. I just want it to go fast in a straight line. $1500 is just a rough estimate. I have a feeling once I get started here im going to end up spending alot more than that. I was also thinking of possibly dropping in a big bore 4 stroke engine or possibly a cr500 engine. I know the swap to a larger engine would make the power that I want alot easier. Is the purchase of the larger engine and the work gonna be worth it or should I stick with what I have?
