What size chain do I need

i just bought a 14 tooth front sprocket for my 400ex (stock is 15). I am keeping the rear sprocket the same, at 38. What size chain do i need?, because i do need a new chain.

Thank you,

cant you just cut a link off your old one to make it shorter??

if your chain is worn out, just count the number of links in the old one, go buy a chain and cut the new one to the same length, or maybe a link shorter and see how that works.

Use the same number of links as you have now. One tooth change isn't enough to worry about. Also, your new chain will be "un-stretched" so it will be a little shorter link for link anyway. Be sure to factor in the master link to your count. People count the links and forget to include the master link in the count and then the chain is too long.

You do realize a smaller front sprocket will reduce top speed right? The effect will be the same as increasing your rear sprocket size by 2.72 teeth.

94 links, same as stock. Don't try to go shorter, because I predict that you will find that a 14 in front is to much. I tried a 14 for a sort time (along with taller Holeshot XCT tires), and even with taller tires it was way to much. My front end would wheelie so easily, it was absolutely dangerous.

I would suggest that you try a rear sprocket that is one tooth larger, as a good compromise (that will require a longer chain).
