How do you know it has got hot enough? I have a pair of 05 Rancher 4x4's that the fan has only kicked on once since I've had them. It was the first day we brought them home and it was about 65 out and we were putting around in the back pasture going up and down creek banks real slow for about 2 hours. Mine kicked on once for about 3 minutes then back off. Since, we've rode them longer, but faster and it has been colder out. I imagine come this summer, that fan will get a bit annoying as it was plenty loud.

my fan is lucky to kick on once every 500 miles, if you really are parnoid that its not working u can jumper the oil temp sensor to ground and turn the key on and the fan will go on

if the temp light comes on and the fan hasnt come on, then you have a problem. other than that, i wouldnt really worry about it.

Mine comes on only in hot ambient temps when driving slow and I mean slow.

I just found out yesterday that not all Ranchers even come with fans. Non ES models, at least up until 04 dont. A friend just bought a used one and saw that it didn't have one. He thought someone had taken it off. After talking to 2 different Honda mechanics, they told him it didn't come with one. So, overheating shouldn't be a problem on any Rancher.

If you are truely worried about it, just jump the wires across the oil temp switch, to make sure the fan works. you can also take the switch out, put a pan of water on your stove with a thermometer in it, hook an ohm meter to the switch, hold the switch with a pair of pliers or something so just the sensor end is submerged in the water and see what temperature the switch closes at. Doing this will tell you exactly where your problem is, if you do have a problem.

When the oil sender is checked in boiling water, resistance is 306-340 ohms at 302 degrees F. 209-231 ohms at 338 degrees F. This is how hot your oil must be to trigger the fan ( pretty hot !! ). The fan can be tested like suggested above, removing the thermosensor wire and ground it out. If the fan still does not run, the fan can be disconnected at the CDI ( the CDI controls the fan ) and puwered up there. The only fan controller issues I have encountered on current Ranchers have been fans continually running. CDI replacement has cured the problem. No it is nothing to be concerned about with all units, I service hundreds upon hundreds of these things and only 2 have had cooling fan controler issues.
In short, If your cooling fan is kicking in, let the unit idle for a while, because you may be nearing the flash point of your engine oil

I have a 03 350 Rancher 4/2 that dosen't have a fan. I thought to they had forgotten to install one. The dealer said they don't all come with one. He said it would have to get extremelly hot before it would come on anyway. Said not to worry about it.
