i bought my 400ex at the end of december of 04, before i know it i was trying to get as much power out of it as possible without going into the motor but with 450rs out and taking over the prices on 400ex stuff dropped pretty signifigantly, and after a summer of riding in the dunes i wanted to start keeping up with the r so i bought a 440 kit off ebay with a cam, piston and sleeve for only $280, then i put a full exhaust on and all the other junk that is nesicary, after it it all said and done it is a really good runnning 440, it will stick with the 450 with a pipe but any other mods after that i have a hard time beatin em up the hills. after i look back at it now i wish i would have gotten a 450, cause all you would need to do is put a pipe on it and you would have all the more power of a 440 without all the extra cash, also when you put a 440 in a 400 thats about all the power your gonna be able to get out of it with still being reliable, other than putting a better crank in it and going bigger on the bore size. i would say go with the 450, put a pipe on it and call it good but then when the time comes and you want more power out of it you can go into its motor and bein in a whole different class than the 440's plus with all the new parts that are coming out for those bikes are endless and are only get better.

What wreckless said.
The 06 450r has about 4-5 more horse than the 04/05 models. I've owned a 440ex cammed, piped, ported and a 05 trx450r. This '06, with simply a full exhaust and cam puts out about 10 more horse than my 440EX did. Getting on the EX now would be kinda boring. I would say this thing pulls about as hard in 5th as my EX did in third or maybe fourth.

This is an excelent question, and even though I am sure its been posted before when the 450's first came out lets revisit it anyhow.
I got to start with the fact that this is a very different decision and comparison to someone who already owns a modded 400ex and one that is just comparing the two. It also should be noted why you or anyone else is comparing them (ex if you just want the most bang for the buck, or whatever other inentions one may have).
Even though I know people who have decided on the 400 over the 450 and I can understand the cost savings, and also that not everyone intends to race or has to have the newest bestest etc I still feel when comparing new to new both are a good decision, but that for the extra $$$ the 450 offers a whole lot more in every dept (from suspension and engine etc right to potential and response to mods)
There are also a whole lot of riders who just dont need the added performance benefits and expense of the 450, and the 400 is a better fit for them.
Its the performance enthusiast who deffinately needs to consider all the benefits of the 450r.
Things get more interesting and confusing when you compare a new 450r to the used modded 400ex you currently have. Especially from a $$$ standpoint the 400 has several things going for it, even though the 450 has more potential, and offers a lot more stock.
Since I have looked at this myself in detail due to owning a fully modded 400ex, and always looking for more performance and better response to mods I have some time invested into making the decision.
So you already have thousands invested into a 400ex (basics like nerfs, wheels, all the al parts etc etc) and maybe even bucked up for some shocks, but even though you own it (hopefully its paid off lol) or have only a few remaining payments its still not worth much on resale (even the newer ones) compared to your investment, and selling it for the purchase of a 450 just increased since you will be losing $$$ on the sale compared to your total investment in the 400.
This puts you in a position where you need to really be honest with yourself and decide if a well tuned powefull used machine with all the right stuff is what you need, or if you have to move up to the newer one etc. I mean if you have to have the 450 your just not going to be happy with the 400 even if you can make it a better performer for a lot less $$$ so may as well go for the new one and take your losses, but if you are not needing the utmost in new tech and are not racing competitively etc or are just on a budget then consider the following.
For a small investment you can make the 400 a much better performer, and yes even surpassing the 450 if you do it right, and can afford the better parts. Sure a similar modded 450 will keep ahead of you in the straights, but if you raise the ante some you can keep pace, stay close or even stay ahead.
The 440 mod is not a really hard one, or expensive one to do, but some of the little stuff that really makes it work or takes it to the next level isnt cheap. Things like head porting, aftermarket shocks and a-arms,cams, valves, carbs, and a host of others that will bring the 400 up to par will seriously increase the amount of $$$ needed.
Even without the added expensive items you can still make your 400 a much better performer with only a small investment. I will use the more common ebay prices in making examples, but for the record I have seen the "kits" really cheap on ebay (under 100.00) and even purchasing the parts seperately doesnt raise the price significantly.
440 kit= 169.00 machine shop (install sleeve 30-80) deck cylinder (20-40) bore and hone the cyl (40-80) MS total= $90- $200
Parts total 169.00 current sub total (assumeing you can do the work) $259.00-$369.00 and thats not too bad
You will also need a few mods that most already have. A aftermarket exhaust silencer or system and intake. You will also have to run a aftermarket cam if you want to see the real benfits of the parts so add another $130.00 for a sub total $389 - $499 plus the time or cost of installation.
If you take the time to set up your comp right and just pick up a couple of the additional parts etc you will bring your machine up to date on the power and be lots more competitive with the new 450's.
So if $$$ is an issue you can always use your head, and preparre your 400 for battle, and if its not you can move up to the 450 and start modding it asap.

If cash really isnt an issue then take your pick and start ordering up your mods, but your best bet always is to search out someone who needs to sell a highly modded model of your liking. That way you get the machine and the mods at a depreciated price, but there not always easy to find.
I am a big fan of the Zuki street bikes, but never was too crazy for their offroad stuff, but have to admit I have found the z400 to be a great machine (why not since its a improved version of what I ride now lol) especially when modded right, but even the Z will not compare to the 450's unless you dump a wad of cash into it.
All in all I dont think you should have any problems since everything your looking at are proven, and perform well etc.
