Recon ES won't shift

'04 Recon ES won't shift electrically. The first gear indicator blinks 3 times - a break - and then 3 times again. For a while it was blinking 8 times. Owners manual don't say anything about any codes. After it has been sitting for a while it may shift a time or two before 1st gear indicator starts blinking and shifting stops. I was thinking battery power related but motor starts easily and lights work just fine. The indicator light will light up for whatever gear I put it in using manual tool but 1st still blinks, even if I have it in first. #1 What should I look for on the shifting problem and & #2 Is the first gear indicator light really blinking some kind of code?

Thanks.

Sounds like the unit needs a service that intails changing a sensor or two......I have seen this problem many times in my shop with ES models which are ridden hard. The customers who ride it like a race quad or WFO all the time ALL HAVE THIS PROBLEM! There is a sensor in the tranny that is bad. Call a local Honda dealer to scedule a service.

Thanks. I don't ride it hard but this gives me a starting point. Looks like a trip to the shop if it is a sensor problem.

Can anyone tell me where these sensor's are located? I pulled one near the shift shaft and cleaned it. Shifted well on the stand but no oil in tranny has kept me from riding it. If there are more sensor's I would like to clean/replace them all.

For anyone that has this same problem - after adding oil and riding for about 1/2 hour it is shifting perfectly now. An early assessment is this sensor is the problem so I'm going to replace it with a new one and keep the original for a spare.
