I have a 400ex and was wondering how hard it is to change the rear axle bearings? My chain is also getting wornout. My bike is a 99 and I'm still running the stock chain and axle bearings. Whats a quality chain that will last? Where could I pick one up?

 

Get a service manual, to see what's involved in changing the bearings, and what parts are needed.

I get my chains form Rocky Mountain ATV. DID X-Ring. Might be a good idea to change out the sprockets at the same time!

 

well if your chain is going most likely you will need new sprockets also and the axle bearings are really easy to take out and grease or get new ones if they are shot...take the tires off and the hub for the wheel that has the brake on that side...take the caliper for the brake off and loosen the axle nut and the rotor and brake hub should slide off the axle...you can either take the chain apart which seems like you are going to be doing or before you go taking the rear apart loosen the fron sprocket and take it off along with the chain so you will be able to pull it over the sprocket in the rear...so you will be able to take the axle all the way out...once the axle is out check the carrier and you will see a seal on each side of the carrier and if you take them out there will be bearings inside along with the races...if the bearings and races look to be in good shape clean them up along with the carrier very well and repack the bearings(regrease them with heavy duty grease for bearings) then check the seals to make sure they are in good condition and if not buy new ones and put them back in making them fluch with the end of the carrier...then just put everything back together and make sure the axle nut is tight along with the axle or else your bearing might as well say bye bye...any ?'s just pm me or respond on here.

just be glad you have a 400ex and not a banshee. adjusting the chain or replaceing the bearings can cost you a new axle bearings and maybe a new carrier if you make the slightest mistake. ask your fellow banshee owners why ha ha yamaha is an evil empire honda's are built like a lego set for adults replaceing your bearings should be easy .....never replace your chain and not your sprockets or the other way around they wear togther it can only cost you money....good luck
