03 Rancher ES-won't shift
 

I have a 2003 Rancher ES. The shift buttons just quit. When I shift it manually, the electric start wil not work, but you can pull start and it will fire right up. When you push the starter button, the display goes dead for a few seconds, then boots up until you hit the button , then it goes dead again. It runs great when pull started, except you can't change gears , any hints ? The neutral digital signal comes on and blinks, will have to count tomorrow to see how many times. Could it be the electric shift motor is stuck or......It is four years old, but maybe has 30 total hours. any help is appreciated

I would think it was the shift system but for the fact that it won't start. Sounds like you might have a battery problem. I'd check the charge level and connections before I did anything else. Hope this helps. Please let us know how you come out.

Yep, the shift problem was the angle sensor located on the front of the engine, below the shift motor. The starting problem, battery had one dead cell. The error codes have all gone away. Amazing how the dead battery problem manifests itself to all kind of electrical problems. I venture a guess that battery problems cause 98% of the electrical gremlims in four wheelers and motorcycles. thanks for your help.
