Does Rancher 400 mean Rancher 420?

Alright, Ive been looking for parts for my 08' Rancher 420. On numerous sites the selections for parts for Ranchers are either the 350 Rancher, and the 400 Rancher. I know the 350 definetly isnt the same, I know that was the previous rancher model/engine. So does the 400 mean 420 or what because I am quite confused.

I think the 400 is the 06' auto trans model. Maybe 05 also?
They discontinued it in 07'.

The Rancher 400AT has an automatic transmission (similar to the Rubicon). It was only made for two years, 06/07, then discontinued (not sure what that tells us about it???). It has plastic that looks similar to the late model 350's, but whether the AT frame is more similar to the old 350 or to the 420 (or neither one???) I do not know. It is still on the Honda web site, which must mean they have lots of them left over. Parts interchangability....I have no idea!

I can't say I am sure exactly when the AT came on the market, but I can say I don't really care either! Obviously something about this machine just didn't work out for Honda, and there have been a few transmission problem posts here in the forum! Honda designs normally run for many many years and this one didn't, so I think that is telling us all to definitely not end up with one of these in our garage....unless you think it will be a collectors item some day???

Somebody did a comparison of 400AT and 420 part numbers, and a large number of them were the same. I think Honda may have realized that the AT transmission and a relatively (compared to the 350) higher purchase price wasn't going to be the hot seller, so seeing they were already tooled up they went back to the drawing board to salvage what they could and came up with the manual transmission 420. With the 420 they kept the price down, and it is clearly the most machine you can get for your $$$ of anything on them market, at least on the utility side. (On the sport quad side, that honour goes to the new Blaster 250!)

The 400AT was dropped for 2008 because of it's price point.
Sales were disappointing from the begininng to the end...and yes, there are PLENTY of 2007 models still sitting in the warehouses ready to ship to dealers. Problem is that Honda still hasn't lowered the dealercost enough to make it a comfortable fit...still.
This is the same reason that Honda has so many 2005, 2006, and 2007 model VTX 1800 motorcycles still available for shipment to the dealers.

I've been looking for parts since I purchased my first 420 in December '06. I'm not sure if the parts are interchangable with the 400, but I do know I'm starting to find more and more parts specific to the 420. Every supplier I've asked has said it takes a while to get aftermarket parts designed, manufactured, and distributed.
