rebuild trx 400?
i have a trx 400 ex and i dont know wether to rebuild the engine, buy new engine, or just buy a new part that it needs. it drinks a lot of oil, it smokes oil, and it ticks a lot. i thought the ticking niose was the valves so i just adjusted them, after that it has been smoking a lot more than usual i thiought it was just oil that dropped from the vlaves into the cylinder, please help!!

You need new rings, or you need to have the cylinder bored and get an oversized piston put in it. It sounds like your motor is getting worn out and needs to be overhauled. If you have the money for it, go for the 416 or 426 and you'll be in good shape. You would most likely benefit from having the head ported and polished as well and having new valves (springs as well), and a new cam too (get a hot cams stage 2 if you go with the oversize bore). It would only make sense to upgrade while you are in there if you are going to have to bore it. You may still just get by with getting new piston rings, but it doesn't sound like it. The ticking noise you are hearing is most likely the valves hitting the piston, or you are low on oil.

i was thinking about getting a bored piston and cam and everything, but i didnt think about the valves hitting the piston. have you heard about the 415 12:1 kit, if so what do you think about them? and do you know any website (besides rocky mountain) to buy engine kits and just parts.
thank you very much

the 415 is technically the same as the 416, depending on who does it and how accurate their machining skills are, you can range from 415-417 or 425-427 etc. When you buy the kit, it should actually be a 416 if I am not mistaken. With a 416 and a 12:1 piston, you would definetely notice a power increase, add a cam and getting the head ported and polished and you would see a significant power increase. Your acceleration will benefit greatly and you'll be reaching top speed much sooner. You'll be pleased, but make sure you have a full aftermarket exhaust system so that you are not bottling up the exhaust flow. The aftermarket exhaust is bigger and allows for better flow, which in turn also adds horsepower. I would NOT use motosport, since they are usually higher on their costs, but they do offer free shipping if you spend over a certain amount ($100 I think). I am not sure who I would contact, but do some research and check with the some of the big boys (Trinity, Sparks, Dasa, East Coast ATV... not sure of what others are on the West Coast) just to get some top end prices to compare to.
