Yes I have a 2001 Honda Rancher electric shift and that happened to me too. Only i was in 3rd gear. I didn't no what was wrong with it so i took it to a local mechanic and he ran some kind of electrical test and said i had broke the angle sensor. I was trail riding when mine happened and i ran a stick up there and it broke it. I took it to the local Honda dealer and they got me a new one and put it on.

i just got my 08 420 out of the shop for the same problem, keep turning the key off and then on, you might be able to get it to shift into 1st by quickly shifting after turning key on, but it will get stuck again. that may help you to be able to move it around.
