"Break In" time for my new rings?
 

I am installing some new piston rings on my 00' Foreman. Is there a break in period I should be aware of, and how long is it?

Personally I will let the unit idle until the cylinder head is warm to the touch, then let it cool down until cold. Repeat 4 to 6 times. Drive the unit as you normally would avoiding wide open throttle for about half a tank of fuel. Vary the throttle under accelleration as well as letting the unit decel to totally seat the rings during this time.

What do you mean when you say, "Drive as you normally would"? I am think ing that I should just take her easy. I'm only going to be plowing for the next four months, and I am thinking that should be enough time to "break her in".

do the warm up and cool down thing like gimpster said. But i would do more than just ride it as you would "normally". noraml being how the average joe on an ATV would ride. After you warm up the engine and go rideing the first few times, be more agressive than you normally would. im not saying go full throttle all the time, but dont be afraid to just gun it at times.

doing this will not only seat your rings properly, but the harder than normal rideing will give you maximum compression. if you go easy on it, like most people do, your compression will be low. low compression means lower power. ride it agressive for 10-20 hours, this will give your engine the best compression and infact better longevity.

I like what you guys have said, but I think the high RPMs is what did my rings in this last time(That and a little too much oil?). I will do the cool down and be nice to her for a while but I will get her going as well.

Is there anything else you guys think I should look at when I put in my new rings (waiting on parts as we speak)?

that is a great article and iv followed it myself before. it is deffinatly worth doing and you will have more power and a longer engine life than an ATV that was broke in too easy
