Honda Rancher UNI Air Filter?

I recently bought a UNI Air Filter for my 2005 Honda Rancher AT and I'm getting ready to install it for the first time. In the past I've always used stock with the wire mesh support canister or a K&N which didn't use the wire mesh support canister inside of it.

I guess I was under the impression that the UNI wouldn't require the canister inside of it either when I bought it to improve air flow, but since it has the small hole in the center of the back of the filter I guess you have to use it to plug the hole.....right?

I don't really see how a UNI will improve air flow over stock filters much at all since it also uses the metal canister inside of it.

Let me know if I'm looking at something wrong and/or if I'm going to have to make other modifications in installing the filter properly.

Thanks for any info!

Honda Rancher UNI Air Filter?

Yup....for some reason, UNI does not provide their own filter support for the Rancher, Foreman, old 300, and maybe some others. That cannister is actually a spark arrestor, in case it backfires into the carb. I think for some reason on these models they are worried about a fire......

The stock filter is very dense, and designed for those who may neglect air filter maintenance. The UNI is 2-stage, with the inner layer being dense and the outer less dense for freeer air flow. So, the UNI flows better than stock, but not as much as a K&N...but it will not pass dirt when properly maintained, like the K&N will (I know this from first hand experience!).

Thanks for the replay reconranger. One last question....on the factory filter the small hole on the backside has a rubber washer surrounding the hole, but the UNI doesn't...does this not allow dirt to pass around the hole easier since it doesn't exactly seal off the same?

Thanks!

I have never had a UNI pass dirt, through that hole. The top of the canister is solid, so there wouldn't be far that the dirt could go if it did.

Funny, I just looked, and my Rancher 420 has no hole (UNI or stock), but the Rancher 350 does.

I have had the best experience with UNI's own filter oil.
