Help, little sisters Recon won't start

My sister has a 2001 Recon and for some reason it has periodic starting and dying problems.

Sometimes it will start sometimes it won't like it is a dead or weak battery, however the battery is not the issue becuase I have switched out the battery with my Recon and it will still sometimes act like the battery is weak and not start.

Also it will die while riding it sometimes for no reason. Especially if going up a steep hill. Then after you've backed down to level ground it won't start as if the battery is weak.

I try pull starting it and sometimes it will start sometimes it won't.

My guess is electrical issue, but don't know where to start. Any help appreciated by me and my sisiter.

Thanks.

Forgot to mention, when it won't start sometimes it just clicks and won't even do a slow trun over.

Did some searching on here and someone mentioned a similar issue and thought it was the Carb overflow tube that was clogged.

check your oil for gas or overfilled. could also be a loose connection somewhere on the starter or just a bad starter all together.

oil in my gas? How could that one happen and cause that kind of issue? Will give it a check. Thanks.

One thing I have learned is that you can have a bad wire and it will short out when moved just right, but you have voltage if you check it. Pull on the cable as best you can and see if it comes apart. Sounds funny until you have a battery cable break with light pressure(and you skin your knuckle on the fender). Also, try putting a load on the smaller wires with a headlight bulb and make sure it lights up bright. Could be loosing power to the ignition and/or not getting the battery charged up properly. Hope this helps.

So if I understand correctly, sometimes it cranks over fine, and sometimes it clicks, and sometimes it dies while running...

I'd be looking at both ends of the battery cable, actually take them off and make sure the contact area is brushed bright and clean.

I had the same issue with my Yamaha. The negitive wire from the battery to the frame was going bad and the machine would start to die all of a sudden then run for a while and die all of a sudden. I thought it was due to a low/weak batt but when the wire finally broke (Way the hell out on the trail) I was able to strip it and clean up the connection to the frame and all was well afterwards.
