What's the secret to protecting left side cover?
I have an 87 TRX250X. I see many, many left side crankcase covers damaged because of a broken chain. The 300EX is the same way. I have the chain guard in place. Is there any other secrets to keeping the cover from getting broken in the event of a chain break?

Case saver is a good investment.

What is a case saver and where can I get one?

Ebay is probably going to be the cheapest place.
If the chain breaks, it's designed to guide the chain past the casing instead of just letting it fly into it. |

Is this what you guys are calling a case saver? If it is, then I have one. But is this enough to save the case if the chain breaks? |
Keep the chain nice and lubed and the correct tension, you will be fine. A broken chain is usually due to lack of maintenance.

If you're up in the air a lot, a chain tensioner or roller guides wouldn't be a bad idea either.
