Default 2006 TRX250EX won't idle

Hi all,

I finally bought a 2006 TRX250EX. He couldn't get it started when I went to buy it, but I bought it anyway because the price was right. The gas smelled bad, so I think it was either old or had stabilizer in it. He said it hadn't been used in a year or so.

I got home, put gas in it (it was empty, maybe that is why it wouldn't start, lol) and it started, but it won't idle. I put premium gas in it and have been riding it around, hoping to clean it out, but it still won't idle. It also leaks a little fuel at the fuel switch. What should I do?

Thanks!

Take the carb apart and clean the carb. Give the pilot jets a real good looking at. This is what the idle problem is going to be.

Well, sounds like the perfect time to get intimate with the carb! Chances are the pilot jet is partially clogged and/or the floats may be sticking a bit. Left sitting for a year the gas probably left a nice mess in the float bowl that will need to be cleaned. You will have to find where that fuel petcock is leaking and get that fixed as well. If you haven't already, changing the spark plug, servicing the air filter, and changing the oil should all be on the short list of tasks to do.

I'll get to it. Thanks, guys! Are there any DIY guides on the forums for the carb?

Thanks again.

I would get the REPAIR manual for it... It will make your life better. It's Really a "must have."

Here Mikuni carburetor operation and tuning is a good site for beginners.
I did have others but I can't find them now.

This is one of our most frequent posts we get: Quad sits unused for a long time, then starts hard and won't idle.

While it sat, the fuel evaporated and gummed up your idle/pilot/slow jet. Clean it very well, or better yet jets are ceap just replace it.

Thanks, Reconranger. I live pretty far from shops, where can I get the jets? Which one is the right one?

Best to have a service manual in hand before you begin. They are available on line for a reasonable price.
