2008 Rancher 420ES won't start
I have a rancher 420ES that won't start. The battery was dead so I tried jumping it. Still no luck. It will turn over but won't fire. I also tried to see if the ES would work and it doesn't. Any suggestions on what to look for. I bought it used and don't have a manual.
Thanks, |
By "won't fire" do you mean that you took the spark plug out and when you crank it over it doesn't spark???? With it jumped or the batter charged, when you turn the key on do you hear the fuel pump come on??? These start really hard when they have sat for a long time.
If it is just a dead battery, it should still push start. I have never tried to push start and ES system (I would never own one in the first place!), but maybe you can put the backup footshifter on it, get into 3rd gear or something, hold the lever up to keep the clutch engaged, then release it with someone towing you. It will take a bit for the fuel pressure to come up, if the fuel pump is working. |
Make sure the kill switch is in the run position.
Maybe it was shut off with the kill switch and the key never got turned to the off position and ran the battery dead. The only rancher I would own would own would be an ES. |
Kill switch thing is a good point! I have seen folks stumped by this one a hundred times. When I train a rookie rider, this is one of the pitfalls I point out....

I already checked the kill switch. and still won't start. The shift indicator light just has a line that just blinks.
|
The problem is with the EFI .. You have to count the long & short blinks...
|
are you sure it is not between gears? Try pulling the front brake and starting it. It will start in gear if you have the front brake pulled.
I didn't read the part about the dashes blinking, but you could still try the brake trick.... |
My mistake , I didn't read that correctly .. It is not an PGM-FI problem unless the FI light blinks . .
