What problems did the early Foreman 400's have ?

I've heard that the early Foreman 400's had some bugs in them that were eventually worked out but I haven't heard specifically what the problems were . I'm interested as I purchased a used Foreman . So far I haven't had an ounce of trouble but I would like to know what to keep my eyes open for as far as problems .

Early model 400 foremans were plagued by a faulty crankcase breather which allowed dust , dirt and worst of all water to get into the crankcase, Honda issued a recall on these machines as long as they were still under warranty they fixed the condition . The fix was attaching a length of hose to the breather routing it to the airbox, drilling a hole in the airbox and siliconing around the hole to seal it, This was a cheap easy fix which also worked well. If you find this setup on your foreman then you may have one of these machines . I performed this fix on a few Foremans myself for friends of mine it was not difficult. Maybe someone with a little more Honda knowledge can tell exactly when the Foremans with this problem were made. I only know of one failure around here due to this problem it resulted in a $1100.00 overhaul for the owner so don,t take this lightly. There was a small writeup in ATV magazine during the time that this happened but I cannot remember when it was I believe it was early in 1997.
