Default Changing clutch cables...

Well... to start off... i don't need the help of installation... What i was wondering... and this may have been covered before... but i can not seem to find what i'm looking for... I've read else where.... that if you take a clutch cable from a 250x that it's perfect for the 400ex... it's long enough to route it else where... which is perfect... as i'm burning my cable with my head pipes... My actual question is... does that really work? are they that much longer??? anyhelp would be nice... either that or i'm gonna do it and see how it works out... I just know i can't keep buying cables...
