rancher battery problem
 

I have a 2003 rancher 350es the factory battery lasted allmost 8 years.i put a new battery in 2 years ago. after the atv sat the winter , 4 months covered outside.when spring came around went to start it up batt was dead .it had no acid in it at all .i got a new batt again last year.went to start it up yesterday .same thing happened again.this time i put water in batt jumped started it let it run for 20 min ,thinking it might recharge the batt .when i turned it off ,batt was dead.anybody have any ideal what would cause this to happen?

I'd highly recommend AGM type batteries, as opposed to flooded ones you add water to. A battery tender would also be a good idea during the off season.

Once you get a good battery in it, I would use a multi-meter and take a voltage reading at the battery with the ATV off, and with it reved up. That would give you an idea of what kind of charging voltage you've got.

Also, shut the quad off, unhook the negative cable, and take an amp meter reading between the end of the cable and the battery terminal. A few milliamp would be normal. Much more than that, and you have an excessive key-off draw you would want to track down.

Plus 0ne on what said above But also if voltage reg. is over charging it could boil out batt, it also will cause headlights bulbs to blow, BUT get your reading first and lets us know....

I agree with Jeffin. Make sure there are no electrical problems first. If you don't buy the sealed batteries designed for ATV's you are asking for problems. Also, I personally think some of these replacement batteries are of very poor quality.

when a battery sits in the cold , if it goes dead it can freeze, maybe they froze and broke the case and all acid leaked out, the gel or agl batteries are better, do as they said and check out the charging system, buy a new battery and look into a tender
