I need help with finding and fixing a TRX250R problem.

Last summer I inherited a 1986 TRX250R and once I got it I tried to start it and it wouldn't start. I tried new spark plugs and then I realized there was a gash in the ignition coil that came off of the spark plug. I ordered a new one and installed it, but it still wouldn't get a spark.

It's been sitting since, but I really need to find the problem and fix it. I know it runs and was started a month prior to me getting it.

I really know nothing about the ignition system so I need some help finding problem. I've been told by someone that it might be the "CDI". I looked in the ignition breakdown diagram and I found the CDI, and now that it's warmed up I'm going to try to see if that's the problem. But I'm not sure how exactly to get to it nor do I know what to look for it to see if it's causing it.

So can anyone help me? What could be causing in this and how do I go about checking if it's the cause?

I greatly appreciate any comments and help.

Thanks,
Coby

pull the plug and see if your getting spark
is it getting gas
oull the carb and clean
check compresson
these are the things I would check first.

All I know about CDI's is that there is no way to test one. The only way to find out if it's bad is to test everything else in the ignition circuit, and if everything else is good, you have a bad CDI. Oh, and I know one other thing....they're expensive.

It's not getting any spark at all. I just need to find out why.

make sure you have a good ground, and check all connections

Sorry for my ignorance, but how should I go about doing that?

Do you mean just all the connections in the ignition/electrical system?

Tomorrow I'm going to tear it open, but I'm not entirely sure of the best way to get to the electronics.

Thanks

electric problems are the worst

Anyone else have any advice or thoughts?

Once it warms up again I'll try to find the problem, but I really wish I had an idea what to look for.

If the only time it don't start is when it's hot. Most likely the coil or cdi box getting hot.
