changing bearing carrier on 450r
 

I have an '07 trx450r that i need to change the axle bearing carrier on. I can't seem to find any way of taking the axle nut off. I called the local Honda shop and they told me it was reverse thread. It has 2 places to get on the axle nut with a wrench that are 2 different sizes so I'm thinking this is a two piece axle nut. If someone has done this and can give me some advice on how to get the axle nut loose I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

As you were told they are reverse thread.
I ordered special wrenches from www.rockymountainatv.com because I could not find any other wrenches that would fit them except for large pipe wrenches.

OK, what you need to do is, turn the inside nut (the one closest to the rotor) so that it is moving closer to the rotor, move it as far as you can.
Then you need to turn the outside nut in the same direction, this will expose a retaining split-ring on the axle that you remove and then unscrew both nuts off the axle.
If you don't have the proper size wrenches it's a real pain in the ass.
There is probably locktite on the nuts so it will help if you heat them with a torch.

Hey thank you. I'll try that this evenong. You're right about the pipe wrenches. Thats all I have that will fit and they are a pain. I guess first thing would be to heat the nut up. I'll give it a shot thanks.

can anyone tell me the size of he bigger nut on the axle of the 450R...

Two different sizes 45mm and 56mm

The big nut on the right side looking at the axle from the rear is a 56mm & the left side thin locking nut on the left side of the big axle nut is a 45.5mm. I bought a set thru motion pro & the nuts came off with barely any muscle put towards them. Just make you push down toward the ground when loosening them. Loosen the thin 45.5mm nut first & spin it toward the swingarm then the same with the big axle nut 56mm & then under the axle nut it will reveal a snap ring or lock ring in a groove in the axle. Take a pair of very thin needle nose pliers & pry it out. Hold one side while grabbing the ring cause it will spin around the axle.
