420 Rancher Stalls When Warmed Up
 

My 2008 Rancher 420FE now dies after being ran a mile or two, the engine just quits but always restarts. When it restarts it stalls again after driving just a couple hundred feet, restarts, and that cycle repeats over and over. If you let it cool off an hour or so, the engine will run for the mile or so and then repeat the stall/start cycle. Asked the dealer and he says they are seeing plugged gas filters with the fuel injected models, that there is a filter inside the fuel pump assembly. I searched the Honda parts catalog and can't find a part number for the fuel filter. Has anyone had this problem? Anyone have a part number for the fuel filter? Is the fuel filter actually the problem? Help, Please.

Check the gas cap vent. Loosten the cap and see if the problem goes away. If it cures the problem, the gas cap vent is plugged.

The 420s do have a fuel filter in the fuel pump. I remember reading about it in my service manual. I'm at work right now but if my memory serves me I think that replacing it seemed to be an easy job. Again this is by memory of what I read in my manual. Thank you RedRancher. I had looked in the Honda Owners Manual and found no mention of the gas filter. Part #16706-HN8-A62 is it. Had been using gas out of the 90 gallon bulk tank and suspect I am getting rust scales from this tank so will quit using it. The filter for the fuel injection system must be quite fine, fine enough to plug up to cause the engine stalling.

Mine will do the same thing everyonce in a while. I will then change the air filter, plug, change the oil, and the filter set. And then it will run fine again.

After changing the gas filter the 420 runs fine. The filter appeared pretty dark, dirty. Also drained the gas tank and found the gas to be murky colored so it looks like I had contaminated gas coming from my 90 gallon bulk tank. The cost of the filter set was about $15.
