Default 82 250r gearing help

im looking to make my 250r more trail friendly/ less clutching/ feathering on trails. ( not mudding it or drowning it) , just trail traveling to dirt pits . i dont need high top speed i mostly use 2nd and 3rd sometimes 4th depending on momentum for the huge dirt hills. also the daughter has been bugging me to take her on a little trail ride like i use to with my 200 atc and 225 Yamaha , but im a little worried to do that with this machine cuz i have to keep the revs high traviling over rocky hills, i LOVE the 250R !, any help would be great thank yu

i live in northern Canada, ontario

The quickest/cheapest way to lower the gearing is to go down one tooth on the front sprocket. This usually makes a pretty noticeable change and does result in a lower top speed(usually.) Beware going to something really small like a 10T though, as the chain will wear faster having to make that tight turn on a little sprocket. You can also add teeth to the rear for the same effect. +3T rear is approximately the same as -1T front. You will lose clearance this way. If you run a swingarm skid / chain guard that is already tight a bigger rear may need some engineering or may just not work.

Being a 2 stroke, a different pipe may do wonders moving the powerband down the rpm range as well.

You won't ever get away from the constant shifting with the R because it's a 2 stroke and the power band is very narrow. You can change sprockets like Scooter said but that will just move your shift points to a different RPM. It won't change how often you need to shift. The R was not made to do what you want. It is a lean mean racing machine. You need a newer 4 stroke that is fully automatic and has some low end grunt if you want to lolly dag through trails with your daughter.

thanks ill go down 1 on the front sprocket n up a few on the rear n look for a pipe that'll move the power band down, if u have any ideas on who makes a good pipe for this lemme know , and no id rather stay far away from 4 strokes as possible every single one iv owned new or old they all let me down n a 2 stroke has never let me down yet , ill just end up buy her a little 50-100cc quad

also the bike has a honda line kit 300cc

Check your PM's. Also, I would just do the front sprocket and try that before changing out the rear as well. One tooth can make a pretty big difference. I have had a couple 2 strokes that were happy enough to putt around on, but you do need to run them every so often to keep them clean. Personally, I think getting your kid on their own age/size appropriate machine will be that much more fun for the both of you.
