Foreman 450ES will not shift to 2nd & up. Ideas?
 

I have a 2001 Foreman 450es that does not shift to 2nd and up. No problem on the display, reads what gear I'm in always. The shift control motor seems to have lots of power to shift easily from Reverse, Neutral, and 1st. It does try to move into 2nd when I try but it won't go. Even when I put the emergency shift tool on and try and move it, it won't go into 2nd (no problem using the tool to get it into 1st, N, or R).

Thought maybe the shift control motor was lacking in power (even though it seems to have lots). Took the angle sensor out and shift motor, hooked it to a new battery and it seems to have a lot of power. Put it all back together and no luck still. Thought maybe my battery power was not enough but the problem persists even with a new battery.

I first noticed this when i was plowing snow recently. When I went to back the quad back in the garage, I noticed a large puddle of oil where it usually sits. Darn near drained it dry. The seal around the emergency shift tool shaft was partially out and the oil leaked out from there. Was able to push it in and add oil (no more leaking). But could I have damaged something from this event (other than almost wrecking my motor from no oil )? This is about when I first noticed that I could no longer shift to 2nd, 3rd, etc.

Transmission problems maybe?

Any suggestions or ideas?

Did you take off shift motor and then the fan gear under cover..Sometimes the gear lube get very thicl and sticky an shift motor cant shift the gears to freely....I alway mix moly grease and 80/90 wt gear oil together to help lube the grease an seem to help me alot...

Look at part picture item 18,19,20 is the gears behind shift motor I was talking about....Also if you take the angle sensor off again plz try to notice to see if gears move when you remove sensor sometimes if gears are sticking you can here them move when sensor is removed.....Good Luck let us know what you find
