2003 rincon grinding when put into gear repair

I have a 2003 Rincon that grinds when shifting from neutral to drive and also neutral to reverse. It is not the linkage, i believe it to be an internal problem with gears and cogs. Does anybody have any exploded view of this repair? I read where a dealership will charge $1,200 for this repair. There has to be a simpler solution. Help

We only ever had one in for service, and it did the gear grinding. Asked the mechanic at the local Honda dealership. His reply, "they all do that, you are lucky it is a 650 so you can slow the idle down to just above stall speed, this helps. 680s are fuel injected so you can't slow them down."

Idle creep

Whenever I put it into gear at an idle it moves. I read somewhere they call that creep. It seems like that would cause it to grind.

As I wrote above, adjust the carburettor throttle stop. "slow the idle down to just above stall speed, this helps."

Don't know why Honda have persisted with that horrible 3 speed auto on the Rincon. The Hydraulic auto used on the 400AT and pre 2014 Rubicon was light years ahead, sadly Honda did drop that gearbox.

2003 Rincon shifting problems Reply

Thanks Merryman, I will try to idle it down. Interesting to note, it goes into reverse much easier and sometimes without grinding than drive. From reverse, it will shift into drive if I do it fast.
