Red face 86 trx 250 utility shifting problem

I got a 86trx 250 I picked up cheap for a project, the steering shaft bearings were gone and I had a hard time finding them and ended up buying another frame for the bearings, I got it fixed and also got the motor running, runs great, but it doesn't go into gear, u can shift up through the gears fine but it doesn't engage, if you keep trying it sometimes it goes in gear and works fine but when shift it noithing again, just wondering if anybody has ran into the same problem before, as there are still alot of these old Honda's around, this 250 is same motor as the big red and 250sx, any help would be appreciated, thanks

Do you have alot of tension or resistance on shift lever or is it very weak ot zero resistance? Does shift lever spring back into place good or slow return?May want to adjust clutch first before get to an teardown.

Very unusual to have problems with this gearbox. However selector mechanisms are weak on the later "in line" Honda engines, particularly the star wheel comes loose on the shift drum, and the pawl which moves the star wheel can crack.

Don't know why you had problems getting steering bearings, they are loose ***** like an old bycycle, available from any bearing supplier. We ordered them from Honda and each ball came in a separate plastic bag, 30 + if I remember rightly.

I needed everything that goes with the bottom bearing, yes u can get the bearings, but I needed the bearing cup that goes into frame and the race and washers on the steering shaft and nobody makes these parts
