Honda rancher

I just rebuilt by 2003 Honda rancher 350 ES. I put new piston rings and cylinder on it. I adjusted the valves and put everything back together. After trying a couple times I finally got it to start only with the choke on. If I tried pressing the gas or taking the choke off it would Bough down and shut off . If you have any advice please help thanks

Have you put the airbox back on? It would run a bit weak if you haven't. Another possibilty is the carb partly blocked. When you remove/refit the tank you disturb sediment that has settled on the bottom, some of it may get into the carb and block it. Remove the float bowl and jets, blow them, and the holes they came from, out with compressed air. Clean and refit the float bowl.

No I did not put the airbox back on yet. I’ll put it back on and try cleaning the carburetor again .Thanks for your help

OK I tried cleaning the carburetor and putting Airbox on and adjusting the valves so finally I just took it back apart and found out that that Top two compression rings had the gap’s facing each other could this be the problem with not wanting to start

"Top two compression rings had the gap’s facing each other could this be the problem with not wanting to start"

No, it would drop compression a tiny amount but with a new bore and rings, compression is otherwise as good as it is ever going to be. You did put the rings the right way up, and top one in the top groove didn't you?

Check you have put the inlet manifold O rings back right, check you have put the carb back together right, fit a new plug, and try again.

OK checked the carb and took the cylinder off and checked in the piston rings too. I tried starting it and it acted like it wanted to run but after a while of trying to start it it just did not want to start. I don’t have any idea what’s going on. This is the second Honda I have rebuilt so I’m still learning

I have been doing some research and found some people having the same problem and it was the CDI box do you think this could be my problem?

CDIs that spark but don't rev up are extremely unusual. The 350 CDI is unavailable anyway. Honda sell a "work around" consisting of a different CDI and a bit of wiring loom to convert it to fit. Just as likely to be coil or trigger coil, though far more likely to be carb. Why did you fit a new cylinder?

The old cylinder was kind scratched up so just replaced it rather than boring the old one

Thanks for ya help. It was the carburetor
