I have 2001 honda rancher 350es 2wd when it shifts it is fine goes thru all gears and reverse works fine.But most of the time it does not want to shift have changed angle sensor,shift motor still nothing. I have switch the computer with a known good one it still does the same thing. Cleaned all connectors and used grease when i put them back . has good battery in it . i have no idea where to go from here..Anyone else ran across this problem?

 

Does it shift easily on the emergency lever once you have removed the shift motor and gearbox? 350s were always prone to mechanical selector problems with the mechanism inside the clutch housing. The star wheel can come loose, the ratchet can crack, or bits break off, and that little lever (on the long rod that also moves the clutch lever) can break as well. I even had one 350 where a selector fork slider rod broke through the crankcase casting and moved with the selector fork, giving the sometimes will, sometimes won't gearchange problems.

 

it shifts easy with out removing the shift motor sometimes it will shift like it is suppose to thru all gears and reverse but most of the time it does not want to shift at all with the switches no power goes to the shift motor.have used a known good switch on handles bars for shifting and a known good computer we have another rancher just like it that everything works so we been using it as for known good parts but nothing seems to work on the one that don,t want to shift all the time

 

Right, you have changed shift motor, angle sensor, ECU and shift buttons, so if it is electrical, it is a loose wire in the harness. Just to be certain, check the voltage across the battery with engine running, should be 13v to 14.5v, as voltages outside this can upset the ECU. As the fault is intermittent, are you absolutely certain it will change on the emergency lever correctly EVERY TIME?

One other point, Honda sent out a batch of faulty angle sensors about ten years ago, all decent dealers should have disposed of them, but you never know, just to be certain you didn't buy a dud, they have "Made in Mexico" written on them.

 

Yes, it is probably a problem with the wiring harness.
I assume you have checked for a voltage spike at the shift motor
when you press the shift buttons, and get nothing.
A bad angle sensor should still allow the first shift to work as long as the
voltage to the sensor is good: 5V on one wire, 2.5V on the second wire,
ground on the third.

If you don't want to replace the wiring harness, you can bypass the ECU
with relays to directly control the shift motor with the shift buttons.
I have done that on my 2000 Foreman and it works great!
