New to riding.. thinking of an '18 rancher
 

So, the title pretty much explains it. I'm new to riding. That being said, I have ridden in the past, however I have never owned a ride. I am looking for something easy to maintain, durable, and basic. I don't want/need anything big, no 1000CC ride, nothing extreme or extravagant. The 2018 Honda Rancher 4x4 really caught my eye. Good quality name, proven durability and serviced at a local dealership 10 mins from home. Does anyone have experience with the '18s? Anything to look out for or avoid?

Mainly using this to hunt and do some mild trail riding. No deep/extreme mud, nothing over the top. Any input you guys could give would be greatly appreciated.

Don't base your decision on just name recognition. While Honda has a good name, there are many other things you should consider. Never buy without a test ride, how comfortable does it ride, are the controls in comfortable reach, feet in comfy position, how does it steer especially in 4wd? Many people buy machines only to leave them set or try to sell at a loss cause they are not confortable. I highly recommend looking at everything and see which one really fits your comfort level along with the rest of your wants and needs. Never buy based on conscience or spur of the moment unless you have really deep pockets! Good luck and let us know your decision.

The post 2014 Honda 420s are excellent machines, I haven't much experience with the IRS version but the swinging arm ones are very good. I don't like the auto, it is both complex and clunky compared to the older CVT Honda autos, but with the manual versions I recon they have got back the reliability crown they lost with the old 420.

If you go with Honda just be sure you stay away from the electric shift auto transmission. In my part of the country we can't give away a used one from all the expensive issues people have had with them. The manual shift models have a good following and sell much quicker. There are many areas that swear by that electric shift, but around here you they don't even want them on a trade in. If your going auto, the good ole CUT cant be beat. The worst case problem is a belt replacement....vs. a grand in transmission work. Also look at tow ratings, CVT will have a higher tow rating...that should tell you something!
