Default 1987 TRX350D Foreman only runs when cranking

Hi Everyone,
New to the forum but have pulled a bunch of very useful info for this buggy from you all, like the 1 off ignition system. When I got it, it would start once a day and run for a couple minutes. I loaded it on the trailer, brought it home in June. Never fired again. I replaced the light switch, tied the blk/wh and blk/grn together for the kill switch. Replaced the ignition switch, which showed a 4 wire on the site, but shipped me a 6 wire. Replaced coil and plug. Followed the instructions I found on the site about tighten grounds, and clean all connections. Replaced neutral switch. I now get consistent fire when it cranks. It’ll run as long as you keep your finger on the stater button. Do you all think it’s the ignition switch or did I screw up the kill switch? Thanks

You screwed up everything, get a proper ignition switch and light switch. Honda used several different ignition systems, from conventional AC CDI on the early models and the 250 right to now. A sort of hybrid AC/DC on the 400 and on to a full DC system on the 2000 to 2006 350 models. The kill switch is positive on the 2006 model 350, I fixed one yesterday which had a broken kill wire. I don't know what the 1980s 350D used, and unless you do, keep it standard.

Hey Merryman,

the light switch was supposed to be for the 1987 foreman. So was the ignition. I thought the only things that were really touch for this year was the cdi box. Wire colors matched up with my harness and the old switch. I had already done the kill switch bypass so i figure the rest of that part was good. The lights work at least. Where can you source parts for these things? I’ve seen a number of folks with the same problem, try to find real 1987 foreman parts.

thanks

Just checked the parts book and though unavailable, the drawing shows at least 5 wires from the ignition switch, so my guess is your old switch was fitted by someone who couldn't get the proper switch. So, it may not be the new electrical bits causing the problem, see if it sparks on the kick start, if it does, I see no reason why it shouldn't spark after you stop turning the engine on the electric start. The problem could in fact be carburettor, give it a clean out.

Thanks Merryman, I’ll see if I get spark using the kick start and check the carb. If I don’t get spark with the kickstart I’ll recheck wiring. I ordered a NOS light/start switch from a company called CMS in the Netherlands whenever that shows up from across the big pond I’ll swap it out again. Thanks
