Shifting problem, 2012 Rancher 420

Driving me crazy. Get 24 code. Replaced shift angle sensor. Pulled shift motor out, spins both directions when pushing up down buttons. pulled shift gears out, checked, cleaned, greased. Put back together, push up down buttons, nothing, no sound. put on esp, manually shift gears engine off, can feel it go through the gears, but display just shows the 24 code, not the gear numbers. Battery is over 12 volts. Ideas? Also will only turn over in neutral, even with the right brake lever depressed.

Not sure I can help...only commiserate with you on the issue. I have an older 98 Honda Foreman 4x4 450 ES (Electric Shift) Even though the years are way different, it appears that the solutions haven't changed. ie: battery voltage, angle sensor, shift motor, push buttons, etc. I've done everything you can do to mine according to the book and still no shift. Occasionally, it will shift to first and back to neutral - once - and that's it.

Only thing I can recommend is that you clean the connections at the control unit (the computer) - in fact, all the connections, plugs, switches - should be checked and cleaned. Anything that might rob or keep voltage from getting where it needs to be. If you have a troubleshooting guide, it will probably tell you how to check voltage/resistance at certain points to see if there is enough where it needs to be.

I'm basing my response on what I went through with my 98, so I can offer nothing specific to your model/year. Wish I had more, but...

Thanks

I pulled apart the shift motor, one of the brushes was stuck. Cleaned it up, works great now. Also put dielectric grease on all the connections.
