Every time I change the oil on my 400 ex (the tank, the drain bolt crank, and the filter) I put the recommended 1.95 quarts in the darn thing and Let her idle for five minutes and then let the bike set for three and check low and behold its always low. About at the u on the upper. How much are you guys putting in after a complete oil change to bring it up to full?
The service manual says it will take actuly 2.3 quarts on a engine disassembly oil fill. |
Greatone
I put two full quarts in the ex on my last oil change and let it idle for 3 or 4 minutes. I also noticed that it read low. Not wanting to overfill it, I restarted it and this time I reved it up some. I let it run about 5 minutes and then shut it down and checked it and it was fine this time. Hope this helps. |
The service manual says not to rev it up or it will give the wrong reading.
Go figure???????????????????????????????????????????? ?????????? |
Greatone,
Maybe you should try 2.3 quarts. This might do the trick. Let us know what you do and what happens. Good luck. |
Thanks,
But Mine should not be any different than the bazillion others out there? Does anyone else have this situation? |
?

I put 1.5 quarts in and then start it up and run it for about 30 seconds. Then I shut it down and add the last 0.5 quart. This technique puts me right at the top of full. This is with an oil filter change.

Would it make a differance if you added all up front (1.95 qts)and if so why? There is plenty of room for it to consume it without overfilling.
|
I put all 2 quarts in mine and it reads just a hair above full. It's only 1/10th qt. difference between 1.95 and 2 full quarts. I've never had a problem and it makes it real easy to change oil. No starting it, reving it and letting it idle for half an hour. That's riding time you're wasting!

Greatone: When I try to add 2 quarts all at once, it backs up into my funnel spout. Then I usually screw up and accidentally lift the funnel too quickly and get oil all over the place. By adding 1.5 quarts first and pulling it around the engine/filter, I have plenty of room for that last 0.5 quart.
But heh, if you can add the 2 quarts all at once like 400exrydr, then that's even better. |
