I'm getting a new quad next week and i've narrowed it down to these two. Which quad is the fastest? And which is the best all around?
THANKS

The 400ex is faster, but that doesn't make it the best all around. It depends on what your needs are. If I had to say which one would be better all around for the type of riding that I do, I would probably have to pick the Scrambler. However, if you gave me a choice between the two I still would probably take the 400ex. That doesn't really make sense does it? Guess the speed and handling of the EX outway the versatility of the Polaris in my opinion. However, if you were talking about the 400ex and the 400 Scrambler, I would probably take the Scrambler. That's just me though. Why don't you list the type of riding you do? There still won't be any right or wrong answer, but we may be able to provide enough information to make your decision easier.

I had the opportunity to drive both yesterday. We actually drag raced and in the distance we raced which is probably a little less than 100 yards the winner was the one who got the jump most of the time. We switched bikes back and forth and the 500 Scrambler feels so slow but it wasn't. The bottom end power was close between the two. However given maybe another 100 feet the 400EX would be way past the Scrambler. I didn't like the Polaris at all. It is sooo heavy and bulky and it sits way too high. It doesn't handle half as well as the Honda but is rides like a Cadillac. I certainly wouldn't want it to land on me if it ever flipped over! Neither bike was mine. The Polaris was bone stock and the 400EX has a White Brothers e-series slip on and a K&N with a 2.5" hole in the airbox lid and it was re-jetted. I also drove a 400EX with a Pro circuit full exhaust and it was slower than the one with the e-series slip on! The 400EX was definately without a doubt alot more fun to drive then the Polaris. So much more control because it has a clutch and front and rear brakes seperate. I didn't feel like the Polaris was nearly as sure footed.

I can't imagine why anyone would buy a Scrambler- unless it's for their wife or girlfriend. Those bikes downright SUCK! -I guess they do have their place in the ATV world- but for a sport bike?- no way!

My buddy has a Scrambler 500 (for his wife) and when we ride together- there is just no compairison. It cannot jump as high- and in the drag races- I smoke it.

Quadfamily, I'm not saying that your post is incorrect- becasue it is possible that the scrambler was hooking up faster- But I think there were a lot more factors involved with your drag racing- Tire tread (traction), power shifting with the 400ex (probibly not), jetting on the 400ex?-

When I race scramblers- I spank them hard! ...and I weigh an average of 80 pounds HEAVIER than the other racer. I'm 240.

So- definately think TWICE about a scrambler- Unless you can't shift- and are missing fingers on your left hand- DO NOT GET THE SCRAMBLER

RotGutBottom,

You have a right to your opinion, and what you say may be true, but he never said what type of riding he will be doing. I don't see how you can totally rule out the Scrambler without knowing more details.

It's obvious that if he was just going to be racing around an MX track that the 400ex would be a better quad for him, but if he is going to be trail riding on rough trails then there is nothing wrong with the Scrambler (he didn't say if he was going to get the 4x4 or not though). I ride with a Warrior, Banshee, and 300ex every weekend and usually my Polaris (400 2x4) does the best on the trails. In a flat out drag race it loses to the Banshee but holds it's own until top end.

The 400 Scrambler also has a lot more potential than the 400x does (if we're talking straight line drag racing). Put a pipe on it and I don't think the 400ex would be the winner any more. Do a little bit more work to it ($1500) and your smoking Piped Banshee's and Raptors.

It's all in what the guy is looking for though. Based on the information he has provided nobody should be able to say which quad is better for him. The best we can do is give him the good and bad of both quads and let him decide.

Like I said before though, if I had a choice between a 500 Scrambler and a 400ex I would take the 400ex even though the Polaris is more versatile in my opinion. I like to play around and take jumps and stuff, and the Polaris just doesn't handle that very well. However I would rather have the 400 Scrambler than the 400ex. That is just my opinion though, I may think differently if I was in his situation.

Piranha-

well- it's clear that you are a polaris owner- and YOU too have your right to an opinion- However, I'm have to disagree with your statement of a polaris being a better handler on the trail. In ALL the shootouts- Scramblers come in dead last- even on the trail rides. the 400ex runs the best lap times on MX AND trail. The Scrambler is large and bulky. When I ride on the scramblers- I feel like I'm sitting on the back of a cow.

Yes- if you dump 1,500 into a polaris- you can make it fast. But If I dump 1,500 into a 400ex- it would now be called a 440ex- which would kick the daylights out of a hopped up scrambler. Dollar for dollar- you can make a 400ex more powerful than a scrambler.

The ONLY condition that a scrambler would be better would be going up a boulder field where riding a clutch on a 400ex would be difficult- or like I said earlier- if your missing your left hand. (but then again- you probibly wouldn't be riding unless you had a hook taped on your stump)

Lets face it... 400ex is better. The only good thing about a polaris is they make us 400ex riders have BIGGER ego's. They are easy to spank in any race situation- and make photographs even cooler when I sky over them in the air.

..nice try though- Thanks for playing

Sorry if you misunderstood what I meant. I DID NOT mean that a Scrambler is a "better handler" on the trail. I meant that in a rough trail where there is mud, stumps, rocks, and other obstacles I think that the Polaris is better. The 400ex was built with racing in mind so that is understandable. If you have a fairly easy trail, with twists and turns then the 400ex is the "better handler".

As for a 440ex beating a HPD Modded Scrambler (in a straight line) I find it VERY hard to believe. Will a 440ex beat a Raptor? Will it beat a Piped Banshee? I don't know the answers to these questions, but if either one of them is a NO then it won't beat a Race Modded Scrambler. End of story.

<< Dollar for dollar- you can make a 400ex more powerful than a scrambler. >>

I find it hard to believe that for $1500 you can push 75 horsepower out of a 400ex, or a 440ex.

<< ..nice try though- Thanks for playing >>

Hold on...the game isn't over yet. Answer my questions and we'll see.

Also, I do own a Polaris, but I know that a lot of quads are far superior. Like I said, for the type of riding I do I would rather have a 400ex than a 500 Scrambler. It still is just my opinion though.

Later,

-Josh
