This EX is goin to be mostly ridden. I am going to be racing my friends that have scramblers and 300 ex's. I want to out do them in all aspects of it. Racing, riding, speed, and the lovable wheelies. It will also be jumped on my friends race track....

I would find a wrecked one it will save you a lot on miscelaneous parts like calipers rotors spindles and stuff like that.

Building one from the ground up, you would be better off to go with aftermarket stuff, and not the cheap stuff either. See, if you build it with all honda parts, it will cost you more than buying one brand new, and whats the sense in that? If you build it with things like aftermarket suspension and stuff like this, then you will still be spending more money, but making it worth it as you will have a much better quad than a stock 400ex. But I dont see the point in spending more money to put work into building something than it would cost to walk into the showroom and walk out with one do you? If you really wanna build it that badly, go buy one and take it all apart then put it back together.

And the post saying that you have to own a 400ex to get a frame is right on, you can no longer buy NEW 400ex frames from the factory without owning one previously. You can however find used ones or even new ones out there from individuals.

Thanks everyone for giving me all of your opinions.... I think what i will probably end up doing, is buying a used one and just customize it to what I want... I didn't know that you couldn't buy a frame for the 400 ex anymore.. Does anyone know the reason why??

From what I've heard, you have to provide Honda with the VIN of the old frame - prevents stolen bikes from being reframed with a new VIN that's not traceable to the stolen property.
